Shaima El-Mowafi is a Ph.D. candidate in Molecular Biology at Pennsylvania State University. She investigates the development of new lead compounds that could potentially be precursors for novel antibiotics.
Her research will help identify potent inhibitors of novel targets that are essential for viability or pathogenesis in a wide variety of bacteria. It could also shed new light on the understanding of physiological roles of essential pathways in these organisms. Shaima’s ultimate aim is to assist in developing novel drugs that could be more efficient than conventional antibiotics with their bacterial resistance-associated drawbacks.
A native of Egypt, Shaima received both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from the University of Ain Shams in Cairo prior to her selection as an International Fulbright Science & Technology Fellow. She also worked as an assistant researcher at the National Research Centre where she plans to return at the completion of her Ph.D. studies.
