As an International Fulbright Science & Technology Fellow, Gabriela is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her research investigates stochastic modeling of biological processes, involving evolution of biological sequences and cancer biology. Gabriela Cybis was born in Porto Alegre in the South of Brazil. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Her undergraduate work on statistical tests for biological sequences won a gold medal at IMPA’s (National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) National Fair for Undergraduate Projects. As an undergraduate she also worked with deterministic models for insects’ innate immune systems. She obtained a Master’s degree in Mathematics, with emphasis in statistics and stochastic processes at UFRGS, where she continued working on biological sequences and stochastic processes.
Upon her return to Brazil, Gabriela wishes to work for the advancement of productive biology and mathematics interdisciplinary collaborations.
