Gaza (Fulbright S&T grantee 2010)
Asmaa Al-Susi is the first International Fulbright Science & Technology Fellow from the Palestinian Territories. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in Pharmacology at the University of Kansas. Her main areas of interest within Pharmacology are Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry. Asmaa is interested in isolating and identifying a known or new active natural ingredient. She believes that plants are the key to solving a number of diseases that affect humanity and is focused on contributing to the pursuit of new, innovative herbal treatments.
Prior to traveling to the United States, Asmaa lived in Gaza. She was a lecturer and laboratory teacher at Al Azhar University (Gaza). Asmaa received both her Bachelor of Science degree and her Master’s in Pharmacy from Al Azhar University. She graduated first in her class in her B.Sc. program. She was born in Libya and has lived in both Egypt and Lebanon. She is also currently a member of the Palestinian Pharmacist Syndicate.
After Asmaa completes her Ph.D. program, she plans to return to Gaza to teach in the Pharmacy College at Al Azhar University. She notes that at home, few women receive their Ph.D. so she wishes to serve as an example to women and girls.
